Before returning to academic study, Karen worked in the museum and heritage sector(s) for over a decade and thus has worked with various Scottish collections including Glasgow Print Studio, The Museum of Scottish Railways and Glencoe & North Lorn Folk Museum. She is currently working with Heart of Midlothian Football Club and Glasgow Caledonian University.
